Hydraulic Balancing

Why is hydraulic balancing mandatory?

Heating systems often work inefficiently, but one decisive measure can change that — and in many cases is even required by law. Find out the legal requirements and reasons for hydraulic balancing.

Why is hydraulic balancing mandatory?

The duty to hydraulic balancing is intended to ensure the energy efficiency of heating systems. As part of the heating revolution, it is intended to reduce energy consumption and at the same time CO2 emissions. The reconciliation also protects consumers from unpleasant consequences such as unevenly heated rooms and excessive heating costs.

Without hydraulic balancing, heating systems often work inefficiently, as some radiators receive too much heating water and others receive too little heating water. This leads to unnecessary energy losses, higher costs and a poor environmental balance.

When is hydraulic balancing mandatory?

Hydraulic balancing is required by law in Germany if it is required to comply with energy efficiency standards or as part of funding programs.

The legal basis for this is the Building Energy Act (GEG), which makes it mandatory to carry out the reconciliation for new buildings. It also requires Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings (BEG) hydraulic balancing, e.g. when funding is required for heating modernization.

The following is an overview:

Situation Pflicht? Begründung
Neubau Ja GEG §14: Energieeffizienz-Vorgaben
Altbau ohne Förderung Nein Keine gesetzliche Vorschrift
Bestandsanlagen mit Ineffizienz Nein, aber empfohlen Höhere Effizienz und Komfort

What happens if the reconciliation is not carried out?

Failure to carry out hydraulic balancing in a new building violates the requirements of the Building Energy Act (GEG). This can have legal consequences. In theory, there is a risk of fines if energy efficiency requirements are not met, as hydraulic balancing is an essential part of this.

In the case of funded measures, funding may be denied or reclaimed if the reconciliation is not proven.

How is compliance checked?

Compliance with the hydraulic adjustment is documented and confirmed by the specialist contractor. In the case of funded measures, institutions such as BAFA (Federal Office of Economics and Export Control) or the KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau), whether the required supporting documents have been submitted. This includes calculations, documentation of settings and the specialist contractor's declaration.

In new buildings, compliance is often checked by construction approvals or energy consultants. If proof is missing, additional costs may arise for the retrofit.

Who is allowed to carry out hydraulic balancing?

The hydraulic adjustment may only be carried out by a qualified specialist company. Specialists have the necessary technical knowledge and measurement equipment to carry out the adjustment precisely. Professional implementation is essential to apply for funding, as complete documentation and evidence are required. Independent tests without specialist knowledge can impair the efficiency of the plant and exclude funding.

So am I not allowed to carry out the hydraulic adjustment myself?

Whether you can carry out hydraulic balancing yourself depends on the application. Because this is where they stand Method A and B available.

  • The simplified Method A can theoretically be carried out by yourself in smaller systems such as single-family homes, but is imprecise and is not accepted in funding measures.
  • The more precise Method B requires expertise, special measuring equipment and may only be carried out by a qualified specialist company. It is mandatory for new buildings and subsidies. For reliable results, it is always recommended to hire a specialist company.

How often is hydraulic balancing necessary?

Hydraulic balancing is usually only required once, provided that no changes are made to the heating system. After major modifications, such as replacing radiators, installing a heat pump or renovating the insulation, the adjustment should be carried out again. Regular maintenance of the heating system makes it possible to check the settings and adjust them if necessary.
