New funding programs from 2024 — What you should know now for the heat pump installation

The federal government recently passed a bill to amend the Building Energy Act to make the installation of modern heating systems more attractive. More than a third of Germany's energy demand is accounted for by heating buildings and the supply of hot water. In order to reduce CO2 emissions in the building sector, 65 percent of new heating systems are to be powered by renewable energy sources from 2024. To achieve this, a new funding program is being introduced to make it easier to switch to more environmentally friendly heating options. The program applies to owner-occupied residential property and to small landlords with up to six apartments who live in the building in question themselves.

Overview of funding

- Basic funding: All heating options listed in Section 71 of the new Building Energy Act are funded with a funding rate of 30 percent.

- Climate bonus: In addition to basic funding, there are various climate bonuses for specific owners and situations, which provide an additional bonus of 10 to 20 percent.

- Low-interest loans: Low-interest loans of up to 60,000 euros are offered for heating exchanges.

- Tax support: Self-using owners can directly deduct 20 percent of their investment costs from their income tax burden.

‍The existing funding programs will continue to exist, and the new program will be added. Anyone who installs a heat pump can still receive a subsidy of up to 40 percent from the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA).
