The new Building Energy Act (GEG) 2024: What you need to know about the new Heating Act

The heating revolution, the new Building Energy Act (GEG) 2024: What you need to know about the new heating law

The German federal government is planning to severely restrict the use of oil and gas heating systems. The details are set out in the new Building Energy Act (GEG). What does this mean for homeowners and what alternative heating methods will be available from 2024? In this article, you'll find out everything you need to know about the new heating law.

Renewable energy in the focus of the new heating law

From 2024, newly installed heating systems must use at least 65% renewable energy. This new regulation is part of the GEG, which promotes the use of renewable energy and the modernization of heating systems. However, this does not mean that existing oil and gas heating systems must be replaced immediately. There are transition periods and exceptions for existing heating systems to avoid an excessive burden on homeowners.

What alternatives are there to traditional gas heating?

Possible alternatives for traditional oil and gas heating systems include:

1. Electric heat pumps

2. Biomass heating systems (e.g. pellet heating systems)

3. Hybrid heating systems (combination of renewable energy and gas or oil boilers)

4. Solar thermal systems

5. “H2-ready” gas heaters that can be converted to 100% hydrogen

6. gas heating systems that demonstrably use renewable gases (at least 65% biomethane, biogenic liquefied petroleum gas or hydrogen)

Owners can decide for themselves which of these alternatives is best for them. Factors such as the size and insulation of the building, the climate in the region and personal energy consumption play a decisive role.

These factors are covered by the autarc software and thus offers a perfect basis for advice in your customer conversation.

What does the new heating law mean for existing heating systems?

Existing heating systems that are older than 30 years must usually be replaced. This regulation remains unchanged. However, there are exceptions for low-temperature and condensing boilers. Until 2044, boilers may still be operated with fossil fuels. They must then be converted to 100% renewable gases.

Financial support for the transition to renewable energy

The federal government offers extensive funding programs to support the transition to renewable energy sources. This also includes the adjustment of the existing funding structure “Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings” (BEG), which allows funding of up to 30% of the costs.

Conclusion

The switch to renewable energy is a central component of the federal government's climate protection plans. The new heating law is intended to encourage homeowners to modernize their heating systems and convert to renewable energy sources. There are a variety of alternatives to traditional gas heating. The Federal Government is also offering financial support to facilitate the changeover.

Consumers are advised to seek advice from the heating engineer about the best solution for their own situation. An expert can not only calculate the heating load of a building, but also make recommendations for the best alternatives.
